Ben Oviatt named WTO sports writer
Ben Oviatt, a graduate of Youngsville High School and Waynesburg University, has joined the Times Observer staff as full-time sports writer, effective Monday July 29.
Oviatt has been with the Times Observer since August 2012 as a part-time sports writer.
Warren County sports are nothing new to Oviatt, who played varsity baseball and basketball at Youngsville High School before moving on to Waynesburg, where he was a four-year member of the Division III Yellow Jacket baseball program as a left-handed pitcher.
In his collegiate career, he was named Presidents Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week three times and was an All-Conference and All-Mideast Region selection as a senior in 2012.
He currently plays in several local softball leagues and resides in Youngsville. He is a lifelong Pittsburgh sports fan, with his favorite sport being baseball and favorite league the National Hockey League.
“Ben has immersed himself in Warren County sports, both as a player and fan, and has been a valuable addition to the Times Observer staff,” said Bob Patchen, publisher, “both as a writer and photographer. I’m excited to have Ben as part of the Times Observer team.”
“I’m excited to be able to cover sports in my home county on a full-time basis,” said Oviatt. “I’ve enjoyed working with the local teams and athletes since I started here last year.”
