Russell VFD celebrates at annual Jubilee

The parade at the annual Russell Volunteer Fire Department’s Firemen’s Jubilee had plenty of fire trucks and ambulances. and more than enough candy to go around,

Children lined the streets, some prepared with bags to haul their loot home later. Thinking ahead, Zem Zem clowns brought up the rear in the parade, handing out toothbrushes to kids, who accepted them with puzzled looks on their faces.

Afterwards, many went to the firehall for a chicken dinner and some participated in games like a children’s bicycle slow race and an bicycle obstacle course. The kids who could ride the slowest, thereby taking the longest time without touching their feet to the ground, won.

Keeley Alcorn, five, received the first-place WII bowling trophy after a making a five-seven split for a spare.

A lawn mower obstacle course had only one entry, so Clayton Burke’s time of 53 seconds took first, second and third place.

Fire Chief Dave Schwanke, head cook for the chickens, said they would end up cooking 400 chickens with a secret sauce that everyone knows how to make.

The Tour de Russell bike race had 41 racers, with Team Allegheny Cyclery’s Jeremy Bickling taking top honors for the men with a time of 51 minutes and 42 seconds, and Theresa Olson of Team Hollyloft took first in the women’s division with a time of 54 minutes and 46 seconds.
