GIRLS JUNIORS: Big inning does in Girls Juniors in all-star opener

SAINT MARYS – Despite outhitting Saint Marys 6-3, the Warren Girls Juniors were beaten in the scoring column in their all-star opener, Thursday, 18-5 at Benzinger Park in Saint Marys.

The game wasn’t as lopsided as the final score would indicate. Saint Marys actually held just a slim 6-5 lead before erupting for 12 runs in the bottom of the fifth.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first, Warren clawed its way back and took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the third. In the first, Kelsey Kraft ripped a single, stole second and third and eventually scored on a passed ball. In the second inning, Olivia Manderfeld duplicated the feat to tie the game at 2-2.

The visitors jumped ahead in the third inning after Sequoia Eastman reached base to set the table ahead of an RBI single from Paige McCullough.

While Saint Marys would add three runs in the third and one more in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead, the Warren club refused to go down quietly. In the fifth, Katie Freeborough’s two-run double brought home teammates Mackenzie Gravelle and Eastman to get Warren within one, 6-5.

Unfortunately for the locals, Saint Marys would put the game away with a 12-run bottom of the fifth, ending the game via the ten-run rule.

Manderfeld was 3-for-3 for Warren who remains alive in postseason competition. The team’s next game is scheduled for 6 p.m., Friday, at Farm Colony B in North Warren. Opposing Warren will be Punxsutawney.
