GIRLS ALL-STARS: Girls Minors suffer close loss in Saint Marys

SAINT MARYS – Warren’s Girls Minors All-Stars battled back against Saint Marys, but fell, 5-3, in a winners bracket game on Saturday at Benzinger Park in Saint Marys.

Trailing 3-0 in the third, Jordan Sitler bunted for a base hit and consecutive singles by Alexis Nyquist and Marissa Grubbs scored her before Warren left the bases loaded for the first of three times in the game.

Trailing 5-1 in the fifth inning, Grubbs singled for her second hit and pushed Delaney Chase to second base. Chase later scored on a Shelby Kuzminski base hit up the middle to cut the lead to 5-2 after four and a half innings.

An hour weather delay didn’t deter Warren. After a scoreless bottom of the fifth for Saint Marys, Mallorie Baumgrotz led off with a base hit for Warren in the top of the sixth. Sitler, Nyquist and Grubbs walked to force in a run (pinch runner Kamryn Weissinger) before Saint Marys’ pitcher Brianna Grotzinger stopped the bases loaded rally with an infield pop up. Grotzinger finished with 12 strikeouts.

The first three batters of the game scored for Saint Marys, but Warren starter Sitler settled down to allow just one more hit the rest of the way, striking out eight over the complete game loss.

Grubbs finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for Warren. Nyquist and Sitler each reached base twice.

Warren (1-1) next plays Wednesday against the winner of a game between DuBois and Bradford.
