Warren Boys Majors 2-0; Girls Majors eliminated
BRADFORD – Owen Balas and Aiden Morrison had three hits each and Austyn Cummings reached base four times, helping Warren to a 13-3 Boys Majors all-star victory over the Bradford Nationals on Wednesday.
With the win, Warren is 2-0 on the all-star season. It next plays at 4 p.m. Sunday when it travels back to Bradford – this time to play the Americans club.
After taking awhile to find its offensive groove in Monday’s all-star opening win over Smethport-Mount Jewett, Warren had no such trouble on Wednesday. The team scored three times in the top of the first, twice more in the third and fifth innings and essentially put the game on ice with a six-run outburst in the fourth.
Balas and Catfish McMeans set the table nicely in the first, leading off the game with back-to-back singles. Jackson Knupp followed with the first of his two doubles to make it 2-0 and Knupp would later score on Morrison’s RBI double.
After the Nationals scored one run in both the first and second innings to get within 3-2, Warren’s offense began to provide the locals with the gap they were looking for. Cale Albaugh ripped an RBI double in the top of the third and Derek Knapp added an RBI single to push Warren’s lead to 5-2 through three innings.
Warren put the game out of reach with a six-run fourth inning, increasing the advantage to 11-2. Balas singled to start the inning and McMeans was hit by a pitch before Morrison brought home a run with a single. Moments later, Cummings added a two-run double, Knapp brought home a run with a fielder’s choice and Balas’ second hit of the fourth inning brought home the team’s 10th and 11th runs of the game.
Bradford responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Warren scored twice more in the fifth and then closed down the opposition in the bottom of the fifth to end the game via the ten-run rule. Knupp’s second double came in the fifth and preceded an RBI single from Morrison and an RBI double from Knapp.
Balas and Morrison finished with three hits each and McMeans, Knupp, Knapp and Cummings added two hits each. Jaydon Hayes started for the winners, striking out six batters in two innings of work. Cummings pitched the final three innings, striking out five.

St. Marys 8, Warren 4
ST. MARYS – Warren’s Girls Majors All-Stars ran into a couple of District 10 South buzzsaw pitchers, eliminated on Wednesday, 8-4, at St. Marys in the losers bracket final of the 11-and-12-year-old Little League softball division.
Warren trailed 5-0 after 3 1/2 innings, with four unearned runs scoring on four errors in the top of the third for St. Marys.
Warren came back in the fourth when St. Marys pulled its starting pitcher to try to save her for the championship vs. Punxsutawney. Warren’s Maribeth Miller reached on a single and Gracie Wood on a single before Maddie Fetzeck’s two-RBI base hit. Kiersten Hoffman singled in Fetzeck and eventually scored herself on an error to make it 5-4 St. Marys.
St. Marys eventually brought Becka Bauer back in to shut Warren down. Hoffman doubled to lead off the sixth for Warren, but the Girls Majors were eliminated with a 2-2 record in District 10 – and technically the D10 North Champs with only St. Marys and Punxsutawney left in the North/South combined bracket. St. Marys must defeat Punxsy twice to advance.
Miller and Hoffman each finished 2-for-3 with a double for Warren, which outhit St. Marys, 7-5.
St. Marys threatened early in the game with runners on second and third with one out, but Warren pitcher Julia Lobdell fielded a grounder, threw to first, and first baseman Celia Chase threw home to catcher Gracie Wood to tag the runner for a double play and hold a scoreless tie.
