Peace scholars speak at PEO luncheon in Fredonia, N.Y.

International Peace Scholars Alexsandra Szaniawska from Poland and Juhi Roy from India were guest speakers at a recent Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) luncheon at the White Inn, Fredonia, N.Y. Established in 1949, the P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund (IPS) provides scholarships for international women students to pursue graduate study in the United States and Canada before returning to their homelands. Currently enrolled at the University of Buffalo, Alexsandra is writing her thesis for a PhD in American studies and Juhi is working toward a PhD in global gender studies. They shared their educational journeys with CE members and their guests including members of Chapter BS, Buffalo and Chapter V, Snyder, NY.

P.E.O.,, is philanthropic educational organization with 50 state, a provincial and district chapters in the United States and Canada. As a philanthropic organization, P.E.O supports six philanthropies which were developed to assist women in furthering their education. Cottey College is a woman’s college with two-year and selected four-year programs. Owned and operated by P.E.O. since 1927, more than 8,600 women from all the 50 states, four provinces and from over 85 countries have graduated from Cottey College since the first class in 1887. Five other P.E.O. philanthropies, one of which is IPS, provide higher educational assistance through scholarships, grant, awards and loans. These P.E.O. philanthropies have provided $235 million in financial assistance to 90,400 recipients of the ELF (Educational Loan Fund), IPS (International Peace Scholarships), PCE (Program for Continuing Education), PSA (P.E.O. Scholar Awards) and STAR (scholarships for exceptional high school graduating women) projects.

Scarcella, a resident of Warren, has been a member of PEO for 19 years.

“It is a wonderful organization interested in educational promotion of women through scholarships,” Scarcella explained. “I have served as New York State Chapter CE president as well as other offices, and the New York State chairman of the International Peace Scholarship and Educational Loan Fund philanthropies. There are currently eight active members from Warren, and we hope to add more.”
