WALTER WAWREJKO

Walter J. Wawrejko, 81, of Turner Hill Rd., Corry, Pa., passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2013 after a prolonged illness.

He was born on March 12, 1932 on the family farm in Spring Creek, Pa., the youngest of 11 children, of the late John and Theresa Bednarz Wawrejko.

Upon graduating with honors from Corry High School, where he was described as “wise, jovial and wonderful”, he served our country during the Korean Conflict as an Air Force Military Policeman, seeing tours in Northern Africa, England and Guam. Walter returned to the Corry area and resumed employment at Raymond Manufacturing, retiring in 1987 after 37 years of dedicated service.

Walter attended St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church and was a member of the Polish National Alliance and a life member of the VFW Post #264, where he enjoyed the company of friends. In earlier days, he was an avid bowler and played on the Raymond’s team league and was a lifelong Cleveland Indians fan, attending several of their games. Later, he followed that team and many others from the comfort of his home, where visitors would be greeted to the sounds of baseball or some other sporting event on TV. One of his favorite past times was cruising the side roads with his brother, Ted, enjoying the local scenery and wildlife. Although Walter never married and remained private, family was important to him.

In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Choma and six brothers, Walter, as a child, Joe, Frank, Ted, John and Steve Wawrejko.

Walter is survived by three sisters, Genevieve Thompson and Elizabeth Phelps, both of Florida and Helen Plevack of California; and many loving nieces and nephews over several generations.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Bracken Funeral Home, 315 N. Center St., Corry, Pa., on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m., with a Parish Scripture Service at 6:30, and attend the Funeral Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 203 W. Washington St., Corry, Pa., on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Rev. Mark Hoffman will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, Corry, Pa.
