Baseball All-Stars: 6 first-team all-stars from county baseball teams

All three Warren County baseball clubs had first-team region all-stars representatives when selections were released earlier this week.

The Region 7 co-champs and District 10 Class AAA runner-up Warren Dragons had three first-team all-stars in Region 7 while District 10 Class A runner-up Eisenhower boasted a pair and Youngsville had one of its own. Four other players were named to the second-team, including two from Warren and one each from the Eagles and Knights.

In addition to being a first-team Region 7 all-star at both pitcher and shortstop, Warren sophomore Tanner Stanz was named as the region’s pitcher of the year. Stanz compiled a 7-1 record for the Dragons during their 15-6 campaign. Stanz’s ERA in 2013 was an impressive 1.79

Offensively, Stanz batted .388 (26-for-67) with one homer and a team-high 20 RBI.

Joining Stanz on the Region 7 first-team were teammates Austin Schwanke and Collin Fantaskey. Schwanke, a junior outfielder, made several sterling plays in centerfield for Warren in 2013 and his bat began to heat up as the season progressed as well. He finished with a .344 batting average with one homer and 13 RBI.

Fantaskey, also a junior, was chosen as the first-team utility player and led the Dragons in batting average at .429 as well as in hits with 33. He belted a team-high three home runs and was second on the team in RBI with 15. On the mound, Fantaskey compiled a 4-2 record for Warren.

The Dragons’ second-team all-star selections included first baseman Jason Stanton and Fantaskey at the pitching position. Stanton batted .250 for Warren and was responsible for driving in 11 runs.

After a disappointing regular season, the Eisenhower Knights advanced all the way to the District 10 Class A title game before falling to Cochranton. The team’s two Region 4 first-team all-stars – freshman Casey Vincent and senior Coty Cantrell – were a big reason why.

Vincent had an impressive first season at the varsity level and was named a first-team all-star at both shortstop and pitcher. Offensively, Vincent batted .333 with six RBI. He also had a double and a triple.

On the mound, Vincent was 5-3 overall with an ERA of 1.65. He struck out 64 batters and walked only eight. He also was credited with a save.

Cantrell, selected as a second baseman, started slow but came on strong at midseason. The senior finished the year with an average of .281 with seven RBI and a pair of doubles.

The Knights’ last all-star pick was senior outfielder Jeb Fedorchuk. Fedorchuk batted .308 for the Knights with five RBI.

For the Eagles, junior centerfielder Jake Marino was a Region 4 first-team all-star. Marino was Youngsville’s leadoff man for the majority of the season and finished the year with a .279 batting average with three RBI.

Despite missing much of the season with an injury, senior Caleb Linkerhof was a second-team selection at shortstop. Linkerhof led Youngsville with a .407 batting average and was second on the team with seven runs despite playing in just over half of the teams games.
