LITTLE LEAGUE ALL-STARS: Girls Majors are 2-0

SMETHPORT – When the bats got going for the Warren Girls Majors Little League All-Stars on Wednesday, they got going.

Specifically, Ellie Lobdell capped a seven-run second inning with a grand slam over the left-fielder’s head, and Warren improved to 2-0 in tournament play with a 12-2 four-inning win at Smethport.

Warren’s Girls Majors next hosts Punxsutawney – a 4-3 winner over St. Marys – at 4 p.m. Sunday at Hawbaker Field (Farm Colony Complex) in the winners’ bracket final of the eight-team tourney (www.wcybsa.org).

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Celia Chase’s bunt base hit loaded the bases before Julia Lobdell scored Maddie Fetzeck on an RBI hit by pitch to tie the score. Grace Wortman scored Laura Lucks and Trinity Wennberg scored Chase for a 3-1 lead to set up Ellie Lobdell’s grand slam.

Up 7-2, Warren ended the game on the 10-run rule in the bottom of the fourth. Wennberg walked with one out and Maribeth Miller singled to set up Gracie Wood’s two-run single.

Then Kiersten Hoffman and Ceci Citro walked – two of seven in the game for Warren – to set up Lexi Head’s two-RBI hit. After Chase had her second bunt single of the game, Citro scored the game-ending run from third on a wild pitch.

Julia Lobdell settled in nicely in the pitching circle, striking out six without a walk over four innings in the win.
