Super Start: Warren Girls Majors open tourney play with win
The Warren Girls Majors Little League All-Stars started tournament play with a bang on Monday, defeating Bradford, 10-2, at Hawbaker Field in North Warren.
Julia Lobdell was exceptional in the circle for Warren, throwing a no-hitter and striking out 10 batters – including the first seven of the game – in five innings to earn the 11-12-year-old tourney win. Warren visits Smethport on Wednesday in the winners bracket of the Little League District 10 North/South tournament (www.wcybsa.org).
The bats were just as good, as the Warren offense provided all the cushion they would need in a four-run first inning. After Gracie Wood singled home Trinity Wennberg, Ellie Lobdell came around to score on a wild pitch, Wood made it home on a fielder’s choice, and Kiersten Hoffman slid in on another wild pitch to take a 4-0 advantage.
Hoffman singled and scored on a wild pitch once again in the bottom of the third, and Celia Chase laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring home Ceci Citro to strengthen the lead, while Julia Lobdell continued to make quick work of the Bradford line up.
Warren added three more in the fourth when Grace Wortman scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a walk, and Wennberg singled before making her way around the bases and stealing home on the throw back to the pitcher. Wood drove in Maribeth Miller to make it a nine-run home advantage.
Bradford was able to work out of the inning and push a pair of runs across in the top of the fifth to avoid the 10-run mercy rule, but Warren answered when Julia Lobdell – running for Maddie Fetzeck – scored from third on a wild pitch. The Warren defense was able to set the visitors down in order in the top of the sixth to secure the win.
Wood led the way offensively with two runs batted in on two hits. Hoffman, Wennberg, and Ellie Lobdell also had hits for Warren in the win – the opening all-star game for any Warren all-star team this summer.
