Cancer screening

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer with more than one million new cases diagnosed yearly. The most common warning sign for any skin cancer is a change in the appearance of a skin lesion. A Free Skin Cancer Screening will be held at Family Medicine Pine Grove, 1 Timberview Ln., Russell, on Friday, May 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. Gary L. McAfoos, M.D., LLC, Warren Surgeons, Inc.; Jeffrey F Morgan, M.D., LLC; and Amy R. Ordiway, MSN, CRNP, will examine participants for suspicious moles and skin lesion. Registration is required. NCT group to meet

The Allegheny National Forest Chapter of the North Country National Scenic Trail will hold its monthly meeting at the Lion’s Den in Sheffield on Monday, May 20, at 6:30 p.m. The main topic will be elections. The group has many activities planned for the coming months: classes in GPS 101 and Hiking for Distance at Amsler Springs on May 25 (take lunch and a chair), National Trails Day at Chapel Bay June 1 (re-route a short section of trail and construct a log bridge), the A-100 Challenge June 7-9, and the NCT national conference at Slippery Rock University Aug. 12-17. Warren High School Class of 1956 will have lunch at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, at the Olive Garden in Lakewood, N.Y. All classmates and spouses or significant others are welcome.

Plant sale

The Penn State Master Gardeners will host a Perennial Plant Sale and Garden Flea Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at DeFrees Pavilion near the tennis courts at Betts Park. A large selection of perennials will be available.

Hill & Dale to meet

The Hill & Dale Garden Club will have a tailgate party and bring-a-friend day on Wednesday, May 22, at Hearts Content. Participants will meet at 11 a.m. to carpool from Sugar Grove Presbyterian Church parking lot. Speaker will be April Moore, botanist. Participants should take a salad to share, table service and a chair. Hostesses will be Louise Morgan, chairperson, and Lynn Allen, Lila Myer, Ruth Ann Devore and Mary Lou VanDorn. Devotions will be led by VanDorn. For the plant sale at the Presbyterian Church, bring plants in containers or plastic bags.
