Quilts to be shipped

The First Lutheran Church Workshop has had its hands full sewing quilts for Lutheran World Relief and others in need every Wednesday morning from September to May since the 1940s. Ten to 12 members work together each week to cut blocks, sew the blocks into tops, pin liners and backs to the quilt tops, machine stitch the layers together, and hand tie the squares with yarn. The colorful quilts are created from donations of cotton material, sheets and other household linens. Members are proud of their hard work and enjoy displaying some of the nearly 200 quilts before they are packed and sent to the Lutheran World Relief warehouse in Maryland. Over Mother’s Day weekend, the quilts and their unique designs covered pews in the church’s sanctuary.
