BASEBALL: Dragons on fire: Warren win earns tie for region title

WATERFORD – Warren graduated nine seniors from last year’s District 10 Class AAA championship team, so this year’s team had to grow up pretty fast to continue the program’s success.

Eight straight wins later and the Dragons are the co-Region 7 champs, with Harbor Creek, after a 12-2 region win on Monday at Fort LeBoeuf.

“We’ve definitely matured as the season has gone on,” said Warren coach Rick Eaton, whose Dragons are 12-4 overall “and we’ve gotten good pitching and defense.”

This group has shown some resiliency, too, as Fort LeBoeuf went up 2-0 in the first inning.

Once Warren got going, the Dragons scored eight runs in the top of the third inning and four more in the fourth and won in five innings by the 10-run rule.

Tanner Teconchuk walked in the top of the third, and Todd Fasenmyer and Collin Fantaskey had hits to load the bases. Austin Schwanke’s two-run double tied the game and Tanner Stanz had a RBI single for a 3-2 lead. After scoring a run on a wild pitch and loading the bases again, Cameron McIntosh hit a sacrifice fly for a 5-2 lead. Fasenmyer had his second base it of the inning and a RBI and Fantaskey also had his second hit of the inning, a two-run triple to make it 8-2. Teconchuk walked twice in the third.

Schwanke and Stanz had hits in the fourth and Schwanke scored on a groundout for a 9-2 lead, Ed Ord made it 10-2 with a hit, and, after a Carter Cerra double, McIntosh finished the scoring with a two-run single.

Fantaskey, who finished 3-for-4, started and went four innings and Teconchuk finished the two-hitter. Stanz was 3-for-4 as well, and Schwanke, Ord and Fasenmyer had two hits each for Warren in the 15-hit attack. Teconchuk drew three walks.

After a last-inning loss to HarborCreek, Warren has won eight straight and finishes 9-1 in region play. Harbor Creek was a 7-5 winner over Corry on Monday, otherwise the Dragons would have been outright champs.

Warren has two more non-region games before the D10 playoffs – at Mercyhurst Prep at Ainsworth Field on Wednesday and hosting Jamestown (N.Y.) for Senior Day at 11 a.m. Saturday at Old Legion Field.
