Zonta donates and honors leaders
The Zonta Club of Warren hosted its 15th Annual Lucky Numbers Luncheon at the Holiday Inn of Warren on March 2. More than 200 women participated in this Zonta fundraiser in which proceeds go towards community service projects plus four $1,000 annual scholarships. The club also raises funds through pecan sales each November. According to Lucky Numbers event chairwoman Judy Yeagle the event was successful for fellowship as well as gaining funds to support the goals of Zonta.
During the luncheon, the Zonta Club presented its Annual Community Award of $1,000 to Warren Cancer Care Center. Deanne Thomas, Radiation Therapist, accepted the check from Cheryl Gruber, service committee member, and explained their intentions for the funds. Due to the nature of the radiation delivered to patients, the treatment vault is not permitted to have windows. The funds will be used to purchase and install scenic ceiling panels for in the treatment vault to offer the patient an escape from the reality of their treatment. The panels would offer something scenic and comforting that could take their minds off the procedure and help calm their nerves.
Each year, Warren Zontians participate in the Relay for Life and Daffodil Sales to help research funding that can reduce cancer risks, and several projects for the Salvation Army families. Funds also support A Safe Place, Girl Scouts, Don Mills Achievement Center, Four Flags Ceremony, and the Jefferson DeFrees Family Center. Internationally, funds support programs that provide health care and education for women in third world countries, including the birthing kits that Warren Zontians prepared and will send to Africa later this year.
Zonta meets monthly at either lunch or dinner meetings. For more information about Zonta, contact membership chairwoman Melinda King at 723-4663.
