SOFTBALL: Sheffield ends season with loss
The Sheffield bats were shut down in the season finale on Wednesday as the Wolverines recorded just two hits in a 14-0 loss to Elk County Catholic at Sheffield Area High School.
It was a difficult season for Sheffield who finished with a 1-15 overall record on the campaign.
The Crusaders scored in every inning on Wednesday, but didn’t put the game out of reach until the fifth. In that inning, Elk County sent 12 batters to the dish, scoring eight runs and turning a 6-0 game into the 14-0 final.
Sheffield had its best opportunity to score in the third inning. Rachel Maines led off the inning by drawing a walk and advanced to second on a groundout and third on a wild pitch. With Sheffield just 60 feet from breaking the shutout, the Crusaders forced a groundout and strike out to end the inning and the threat.
Brandy Rockwell and Fiscus recorded the only two hits for Sheffield during Wednesday’s game.
Rockwell’s hit was a double in the gap that came during the second inning.
Despite the loss, Fiscus was strong at pitcher, finishing the game with five strikeouts.
