BASEBALL: Dragons win Region 7 showdown

Someone had to crack first in Wednesday’s clash between Region 7 front runners Warren and Harbor Creek and this time it wasn’t Warren.

The Dragons avenged an earlier season loss to the Huskies – their only region loss of the year – with a 2-0 win over the visitors at Old Legion Field. With the win, Warren has won six straight and is 10-4 overall and 8-1 in the region in 2013.

“This was a big win for us,” said Warren coach Rick Eaton. “Playing those tough (non-region) games early on is paying dividends now. Our maturity is really starting to show.”

Tanner Stanz was dominant on the mound for Warren, working all seven innings while striking out 11 and allowing just two free passes with a walk and a hit batter. The sophomore hurler didn’t give up a hit until the sixth inning and finished the day with just three hits surrendered.

Harbor Creek starter Isaac Mattson was impressive in his own right, allowing just one base runner through the first three innings, striking out four and walking one on the day.

The Dragons’ offense got to Mattson in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore centerfielder Austin Schwanke came around to score on an RBI double from Stanz. Schwanke narrowly beat the throw to the plate for the first run of the game and a 1-0 lead.

Warren followed up with another run in the fifth when Ryan Gustafson drew a walk, stole second and hustled around the bases to score on an infield single from Collin Fantaskey.

That was more than enough offense for Stanz and the Dragons’ defense, as they closed out the game and handed the Huskies just their second loss of the season.

With the win, Warren is now tied for first place with Harbor Creek and can clinch at least a share of the region title with a win at Fort LeBoeuf on Monday. The Dragons will play out of region Saturday when Titusville visits Old Legion Field.
