BASEBALL: Warren wins 5th straight
GIRARD – Warren is playing its best baseball of the year, entering a crucial Region 7 matchup with Harbor Creek scheduled for Wednesday at Old Legion Field in North Warren.
The Dragons made it five straight victories Monday, using a three-hit shutout from Tanner Teconchuck to defeat Girard, 7-0, at Girard Area High School.
“We’re doing a great job defensively and our pitchers are really throwing great,” said Warren coach Rick Eaton. “I’d still like to see us hitting the ball with runners in scoring position a little better, but for the most part I’m very happy with the way our guys are playing.”
The Dragons (9-4, 7-1 Region 7) and the Yellowjackets were scoreless into the fourth inning when the visitors broke out for four quick runs. Tanner Stanz and Matt Hultquist singled and Ed Ord knocked in both moments later with a two-run single. Two more Warren runs scored on Girard errors and the Dragons led, 4-0.
Warren tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning using a Collin Fantaskey double and Stanz homer to push the advantage to 6-0. A final run scored in the sixth inning on a wild pitch.
Offensively, the Dragons finished Monday’s game with 11 hits. Fantaskey had three of them with Stanz, Hultquist and Carter Cerra adding two hits apiece. Ord added a hit and Teconchuck also had a hit in addition to his masterpiece on the mound.
Warren’s junior varsity team is 10-2 after a 17-3 win.
Next up for the Dragons is Wednesday’s home game with the Huskies. Harbor Creek is currently 8-0 in Region 7, having defeated Warren 4-3 in extra innings April 22 in Harborcreek.

TITUSVILLE – Here’s a new one.
Youngsville and Titusville were forced to call Monday’s baseball game in the bottom of the fourth inning due to a chemical leak at a factory located next door to the park at which the game was played.
With the Rockets leading 11-0 with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, public safety officials deemed it necessary to evacuate the park after a chlorine leak was deemed a public safety threat. Despite the early ending, the game was deemed official and the Eagles suffered the loss.
“That was a new one for us,” said Youngsville coach Wayne Marino. “I’ve never seen that happen before. It just wasn’t our day. We didn’t commit a single error, but they just hit everything we threw at them. It was just one of those days.”
Titusville’s Adam Bleday, a senior who has committed to pitch at Virginia University next season, limited the Eagles to just one hit in Monday’s loss. Pitcher Aaron Hoover had a fourth inning single.
Youngsville drops to 2-9 with the setback and will try to get back on track Wednesday when they welcome Franklin to Davis Street Field in Youngsville.
