Alethea Lois Flood, 93, of Jacksonville, Florida, and formerly of 6 Crestmont Drive, Warren, died on April 14, 2013 after an extended illness. Lois was born in Sigel, PA on January 31, 1920, while her father was serving as pastor of the Sigel Methodist Church. Her parents were Reverend Cyrus Field Heald, and Mabel Louise (Anderson) Heald. She was a 1938 graduate of Warren High School, and was employed for several years at the Bell Telephone Co. of Pennsylvania. Lois married Frank T Flood on January 16, 1944 while he was home on leave from the US Navy during World War II. Lois and Frank had attended school and church together in Warren since they were 8 years of age, but only began dating after high school. They celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in January 2013, and have been devoted to each other their entire lives.
Lois was blessed with a beautiful soprano voice and used her musical talents from the time she was a child. Her father talked about her standing on a chair singing during his church services when she was only six or seven years old. Lois was a highly requested soloist for weddings in Warren during her younger years, and sang in her church choirs for most of her adult life.
Loie (the name her family and close friends called her) served her family all her life as a kind and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family and home were very important to Loie, and she excelled at being a great homemaker. Loie enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, embroidery, and flower arranging.
Lois and Frank were active members and leaders of the Grace United Methodist Church, and served in many ways there. Lois was active in the Warren Christian Womens Club, and several bowling leagues. Lois and Frank were “snowbirds” after Frank’s retirement in 1982, and spent winters in a Florida retirement village, eventually moving full time to Florida in 2004. They enjoyed their retirement years with their Florida friends, especially after they found another friendly Methodist church and a new bowling league.
Lois is survived by her loving husband, Frank Flood, of Jacksonville, FL; her son, Thomas Flood and his wife Patty, of Springfield, VA; her daughter, Carol Stevens and her husband Bruce, of Jacksonville, FL; her daughter, Debra Truman and her husband Tom, of Clearfield, PA; her sister, Elaine Heald of Warren; her sister, Phyllis Albaugh and her husband, Hap of Clarendon; and her sister Grace, widow of Jim Scalise of Warren. Lois is also survived by five grandchildren: Corinne Stevens of Washington, DC; Kara Hamilton of Toronto, Ontario; Christine Davis of Betheseda, MD; Kellie Swales of Clearfield, PA, and Steven Flood of Springfield, VA; four greatgrandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Lois was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Heald, who died in 1981.
Lois will be honored at two memorial services; one at the Highlands United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, Florida on April 27, 2013. The second service will be at the Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Pennsylvania Ave. East in Warren, PA 16365 on May 11, 2013 at 2 pm with Rev. Kevin Haley, pastor of the Grace United Methodist Church, officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Burial will be in the Warren County Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace United Methodist Church.
