Stephen “Gunny” Shannon Kelly, 62, of Johnny Wike Road, Taylorsville, NC, died Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Iredell Memorial Hospital.
He was born on November 22, 1950, in Warren, to Ida Jean Wolfe Kitelinger and the late Paul Kitelinger. He graduated from Warren Area High School in 1969.
He made a career in the United States Marines retiring after 20 years as a Gunnery Sgt. He collected antiques and Marine Corps memorabilia. He attended the First United Methodist Church of Taylorsville, NC. Gunny enjoyed spending time with his family and tending to his animals.
In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife, Sandra Nicks Kelly, Taylorsville, NC; a stepdaughter, Constance Michelle Dugas, of Cassadaga, NY; a stepson, Michael Shan Dugas and wife, Caroline, of Sumter, SC; five grandchildren; three sisters, Nancy and her husband Jim Kitelinger; Diane and her husband Tom Genberg, Roxie Kelly, all of Warren and a brother, Michael P. Kelly and his wife Eileen, Sheffield, and several nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, May 4th at the Adams Funeral Home, Taylorsville, NC, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, May 5th at 2 p.m. at his residence by the Reverend Josh Sherfey. Military rites will be done by the Marine Corps League.
