TRACK & FIELD: Eagles swept on track

CORRY – The Youngsville track team’s busy week continued Thursday with a non-region meet at Corry Area High School. The Beavers swept the meet, winning the girls competition by a 114-36 count and the boys competition, 92-58.

Both teams are now 1-5 on the season, heading into invitational action scheduled for Saturday at North East High School.

Despite the loss, Youngsville had several standouts including three two-time winners in the boys competition. Tom Chapman swept the 110 and 300 hurdles, winning in 16.66 and 47.46 seconds respectively.

Senior standout Rocco Gatta won the 200 in 23.18 and the 400 in 53.81. Gatta’s 200 time was a season-best as was his 100 time. Gatta finished second in that event. Mike Hamrick was a winner in both the long jump and triple jump. Hamrick’s long jump cleared 19 feet, eight inches and his triple jump was 39 feet, eight and one-half inches.

Other field victories were earned by Austin Mechling and Mitch Wilcox. Mechling’s winning throw in the discus covered 122 feet while Wilcox’s winning javelin traveled 157 feet and eight inches.

The Lady Eagles were victorious in four events and two of those victories were claimed by Piper Olsen. Olsen finished the mile with a winning time of 6:08 and she later added a two-mile victory in a time of 13:37.

Youngsville’s other two wins came in the hurdles events where Abbie Swartzbaugh won the 100-meter version of the event in 16.94 seconds and Mallory Eastman won the 300 hurdles in a time of 50.72 seconds.
