PGC announces hunting seasons and bag limits

The Pennsylvania Game Commission announced 2013-2014 hunting seasons, bag limits and doe license allocations April 15.

Seasons in Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) 2F, which extends over the majority of Warren County, and 1B, which extends over the northwest region of the county, include:

Red, gray, black and fox squirrels – Oct. 19 through Nov. 30, Dec. 16 through 24 and Dec. 26 through Feb. 22; special season for eligible junior hunters and mentored youth scheduled from Oct. 12 through 18. Bag limit of six daily.

Ruffed grouse – Oct. 19 through Nov. 30, Dec. 16 through 24 and Dec. 26 through Jan. 25. Bag limit of two daily.

Cottontail rabbit – Oct. 19 through Nov. 30, Dec. 16 through 24 and Dec. 26 through Feb. 22; special season for eligible junior hunters scheduled from Oct. 12 through 19. Bag limit of four daily

Pheasant – Oct. 26 through Nov. 30, Dec. 16 through 24 and Dec. 26 through Feb. 22; special season for eligible junior hunters scheduled Oct. 12 through 19. Bag limit of two daily.

Bobwhite quail – Oct. 26 through Nov. 30. Bag limit of four daily.

Snowshoe rabbit or varying hare – Dec. 26 through Jan. 1. Bag limit of one daily.

Woodchuck – No closed season, except on Sundays and during the regular firearms deer seasons. No bag limit.

Porcupines – Sept. 1 through Mar. 31. Bag limit of three daily with a season limit of ten. Season closed during overlap with the regular firearms deer seasons.

Crows – July 5 through April 6 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. No bag limit.

Wild turkey – In WMU 1B, Nov. 2 through 9 and Nov. 28 through 30; in WMU 2F, Nov. 2 through 16 and Nov. 28 through 30.

Spring gobbler (bearded only) – May 3 through 31. May 3-17, legal hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise until noon; from May 19 through 31, legal hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset. Special season for eligible junior hunters and mentored youth scheduled for Apr. 26. Season limit of one, season limit may be expanded to two by persons who possess a valid special wild turkey license.

Black bear (archery) – Nov. 18 through 22. Season limit per license year.

Black bear – Nov. 23 through 27. Season limit of one per license year.

Elk – Nov. 4 through 9; extended season for license recipients who have not harvested and elk by Nov. 9 in designated areas scheduled Nov. 11 through 16; special conservation tag season scheduled Sept. 2 through Nov. 9. Season limit of one per license year.

Deer (archery) – Oct. 5 through Nov. 16 and Dec. 26 through Jan. 11. Season limit one antlered deer per license year and one antlerless with each required antlerless license.

Deer (antlered and antlerless) – WMU 1B, Dec. 2 through 14; WMU 2F, Dec. 7 through 14. Season limit one antlered deer per license year and one antlerless with each required antlerless license.

Deer (antlered only) – WMU 2F, Dec. 2 through 6. Season limit one antlered deer per license year.

Deer (antlerless) – Oct. 24 through 26. Junior and Senior license holder, disabled person permit holder and active duty armed service state resident with required antlerless license only.

Deer (antlerless, muzzleloader) – Oct. 19 through 26. Season limit one antlerless deer with each required antlerless license.

Deer (antlered or antlerless, flintlock) – Dec. 26 through Jan. 11. Season limit one antlered deer per license year, or one antlerless and an additional antlerless deer with each required antlerless license.

Coyote – No closed season. No bag limit. Outside of any big game season, coyotes may be taken with a hunting license or a furtaker license, and without wearing orange. During any big game season, coyotes may be taken while lawfully hunting big game or with a furtakers license.

Raccoon and fox – Oct. 26 through Feb. 22. No bag limit.

Opossum, skunk and weasel – No closed season except Sundays. No bag limit.

Bobcat – WMU 2F, Jan. 21 through Feb. 11. Season limit one per license year, but all licensed furtakers may obtain one permit.

Mink and muskrat (trapping) – Nov. 23 through Jan. 5. No bag limit.

Coyote, fox, opossum, raccoon, skunk and weasel (trapping) – Oct. 27 through Feb. 23. No bag limit.

Coyote and fox (cable restraint) – Dec. 26 through Feb. 23. No bag limit. Participants must pass cable restraint certification course.

Beaver (trapping) – Dec. 26 through Mar. 31. Limits vary depending on WMU.

Bobcat (trapping) – WMU 2F, Dec. 21 through Jan. 12. Season limit one per license year.

Fisher (trapping) – WMU 2F, Dec. 21 through 26. Season limit one per license year.
