SOFTBALL: Bad inning costs Sheffield

DUKE CENTER – One bad inning.

Sheffield led 2-0 until a four-run bottom of the fifth catapulted Otto-Eldred to a 5-2 District 9 high school softball win over the Wolverines on Monday.

“Our defense just fell apart in that inning,” said Sheffield coach Traci Vile, whose Wolverines are 1-9 overall. “It was an unfortunate loss because we had them.”

Hannah Vile scored on a fielder’s choice for Sheffield in the second inning, and later added an RBI in the fifth. Brooke Hoffman singled Brandy Rockwell to third before Vile brought her in for a 2-0 lead.

Mary Fiscus – a freshman making her first start at pitcher – would have made it through the game, according to coach Vile, had the defense held the lead. She allowed just one hit through the first four innings.

Sheffield (1-9) is back at it on Tuesday, hosting Kane.
