BOYS TENNIS: Region champs

TITUSVILLE – Warren hopes this is just the first in a long line of championship accomplishments during the 2013 boys tennis season.

The Dragons locked up the District 10 Region 2 championship Saturday with a dominating 5-0 victory over Titusville at Titusville Area High School. With the victory, the Dragons are a perfect 10-0 on the campaign.

Shane Burns had little trouble starting the victory with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over the Rockets’ Shannon Daugherty at first singles. Matt Sandberg followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Eric Maginnins in second singles play.

Finishing the sweep was third singles star Nathan Sandberg who registered a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Titusville’s Josiah Leach.

“Our singles guys are all undefeated with records of 10-0,” said Warren coach Jeff Bartsch.

Warren’s top doubles duo of Grayson Foley and Nick Tarpenning had little trouble with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in first doubles action. The duo of Ylli Bakalli and Liam Boger completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at second doubles.

“Both Warren pairs are undefeated in region matches,” added Bartsch. “Titusville is a good team. They finished second in the region and own a respectable 8-5 record.”

The Dragons have a busy week planned. On Monday, they will host their final region match against Rocky Grove. On Tuesday, they will host Sharon in their final home appearance of the season. The entire Dragons squad will attend the Tri-County Tennis Championships in Sharon on Wednesday. Warren is the defending champion team and will try for a second title in as many years.
