SOFTBALL: Knights top Wolverines

Eisenhower defeated Sheffield, 15-4, on Friday at Eisenhower High School in a cross-district game of county teams.

The Knights totaled 11 hits and scored in every inning, and Haylie Birt pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts for their second win of the season.

After Sheffield got on the board with a run in the top of the first, Eisenhower answered back immediately, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Natasha Morrison led off with a walk and Birt added a single. Brooke Stanton brought them home with a triple, and then scored on a double from Ashley Barnett. Mallory Schutt brought in Barnett with an RBI single for the final run of the inning.

The Knights added three more in the second – two coming off of a mammoth home run from Stanton – and one more in the third before blowing the game open with a seven spot in the fourth. Kristen Wagner started the inning with a walk, Mallory Trumbull added a bunt single, and Sierra Lange walked to load the bases. Morrison drew a walk to bring in a run and Dakota Williams laced a single to bring in two more. Birt drove in another run with a single and Burnett followed with a two-RBI knock of her own.

Sheffield scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, but it was too little, too late for the Wolverines. Emily Knowles drove in Hannah Vile and Rachel Maines brought in Anna Baldensperger in the fourth, and Mary Fiscus drove in her sister Maddie in the fifth.

Maddie Fiscus took the loss for the Wolverines, pitching the first two innings before being relieved by Vile.

For the Knights, Stanton finished with four RBI and Birt added three to go along with a four-for-four day at the plate. Morrison, Birt and Stanton each scored three runs.

“The girls had some good at bats today,” said Eisenhower coach R.J. Williams. “Haylie threw well, and had very good control. The girls had a positive attitude, and getting off to a quick start at the plate helps that.”

The Knights (2-6) will be back in action on Tuesday, when they host county- and region-rival Youngsville, while Sheffield (1-8) will travel to Otto-Eldred on Monday.
