Little League season begins

There’s nothing like Opening Day.

Griffin Suppa and Nick Hussey combined for 12 strikeouts in the United Refining’s 6-3 Boys Minors victory over Inscale Architects. Jackson Knupp doubled and had a three-run homer for Inscale.

In Boys Majors action, Austyn Cummings had a triple and grand slam, helping American Legion to a 14-0 victory over D&I Silica. Sam Hoover also had a big night at the plate with two doubles and a triple.

In Girls Minors play, Alexis Nyquist had a two-run home run down the right-field line and scored three runs in Animalistics Outdoors’ 13-6 season-opening Girls Minors win over John Anderson Construction on Monday in North Warren.

Shelby Kuzminski and Madison Stevenson each had a hit and scored twice for Animalistics, which got eight combined strikeouts from Jordan Sitler and Taylor Childress. Sitler accounted for a double play from the mound.

For Anderson Construction, Mallorie Baumgrotz struck out nine in three innings, and added a ringing hit, and Olivia English struck out four in two innings.

Jena Wilson, Bradyn Wilson and Marissa Grubbs had hits for Inscale Architects, which scored five runs in the fourth to tie its shortened game with Whirley in Girls Minors. Grubbs and Andrea Sveda combined for five K’s in four innings for Inscale, and Alex Neureiter had six strikoeuts in three innings pitched for Whirley. Neureiter and Nevea Hamilton had Whirley’s hits.
