BASEBALL: Warren edged by McDowell in non-region game
McDowell got a bunt down, Warren didn’t.
Sometimes, it’s as simple as that.
McDowell perfectly executed a squeeze play in the top of the seventh, scoring the winning run in a 2-1 victory over the Dragons at Old Legion Field in North Warren.
After the Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Dragons battled back to tie things in the bottom of the second. Carter Cerra doubled and Tanner Teconchuk walked ahead of Austin Schwanke’s two-out RBI single that tied the game.
The score remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the seventh when the Trojans manufactured a run. A McDowell ball hit down the right field line was chased down by Warren’s Ryan Gustafson. Gustafson’s hustle got him to the ball, but the ball somehow popped out and the Trojans had a runner on first.
From there, a sacrifice bunt and stolen base put the go-ahead run on third and that run scored on McDowell’s squeeze play.
In the bottom of the seventh, Schwanke led off with a single, but Warren was unable to get down a sacrifice bunt that would have put Schwanke in scoring position. Instead, Schwanke was doubled off with a frozen rope hit by Collin Fantaskey was snagged for a double play. Todd Fasenmyer followed with a hit that may have scored Schwanke with the tying run had he been sacrificed, but it wasn’t meant to be.
Warren coach Rick Eaton praised the effort of starting pitcher Cerra who allowed just two runs on five hits in seven innings of work. He struck out five and walked just one.
“He stepped up and gave us a real good senior leadership and pitched a great game,” said Eaton. “Just a tough-luck loser.”
The Dragons continue a busy week Tuesday when they host Corry.

J’burg 12, Ike 0
Johnsonburg scored just two earned runs during a 12-0 victory over Eisenhower Monday at Werner Park in Russell.
After having its opening day game postponed no less than ten times, the Knights struggled to find their footing during one of their first outdoor excursions of the 2012 season.
“We only allowed two earned runs so I don’t think today is any indication of how we’re going to play this season,” said Ike coach Jon Vincent. “A lot of the mistakes we made today are things you can’t practice in the gym. We just need to get our feet wet and get some games under our belts and I think we’ll be just fine.”
The game was scoreless into the third inning when the Rams were able to score five runs. All five runs were unearned and set up by a pair of Ike defensive errors.
Johnsonburg pitcher Cole Peterson controlled the Knights lineup for much of the outing, allowing only two Knights base hits. Ike catcher Ryan Williams and first baseman Aaron Lundmark had one single each in the loss.
The Knights (0-1) are scheduled to play four more games this week, including another home game on Tuesday against Titusville.

Iroquois 15, Y’ville 3
Youngsville fell in its region opener on Monday, as Iroquois used two six-run innings to defeat the Eagles, 15-3, in windy conditions at Davis Street Field.
The Eagles kept it close through the first three innings, falling behind 3-0 in the top of the third before battling back to tie the score in the bottom half of the inning.
Dan McLaughlin hit a one-out single into left field, which was followed by a Jonathan Pollow walk. After a fielder’s choice groundout, Aaron Hoover hit a fly ball into right field that was dropped, allowing two runs to score. Caleb Linkerhof brought in the third and final run on a base hit.
The Braves came right back to put up back-to-back six-run innings to put the game out of hand, taking advantage of a few Eagles errors in the process.
“You can’t give them extra outs, and that’s what we did,” Youngsville coach Wayne Marino said.
Linkerhof started on the mound for the Eagles and took the loss, pitching 4.2 innings. Jake Marino pitched the remainder of the game for Youngsville.
“The wind killed us, and I think that’s what caused a lot of the errors,” Marino said. “We’re young behind the plate, and it hurt us. I was just hoping it wouldn’t hurt us in a region game. We’ve gotta get better quick. We started hitting the ball but then those big innings took the wind out of us. You could see everyone’s heads going down when all the runs were crossing the plate.”
The Eagles (1-2, 0-1 in region play) will be back in action on Wednesday, when they host Titusville in another region matchup.
