BOYS TENNIS: Dragons sweep Rockets
The Warren boys tennis team recorded another dominant victory Monday, defeating Region 3 opponent Titusville, 5-0, at Betts Park.
Leading the way for Warren was top singles player Shane Burns. Burns needed just 26 minutes to record a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Shannon Daugherty. Second singles player Matt Sandberg followed that up with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Eric Maginnis.
“Matt had seven aces today,” said Warren coach Jeff Bartsch. “He’s been working on his serve and it was very effective today against a good returner.”
The singles sweep was completed by Nathan Sandberg who scored an efficient 6-0, 6-0 win over Jon Cartney.
Warrens’ top doubles duo of Nick Tarpenning and Grayson Foley started strong with a 6-0 first set win, but struggled to start the second set.
“The second set saw the Dragons down a break, 0-3, before staging a run of six straight games to take the second set and the match,” added Bartsch.
The sweep was completed at second doubles where Ylli Bakalli and Liam Boger picked up a victory.
“The Dragons were impressive in their dominance at the net today,” said Bartsch. “Liam served exceptionally well and Ylli was putting everything away at the net.
“Originally this match was to be played in Titusville, but due to tennis court problems in Titusville, the match was moved to Warren today. The Dragons will travel to Titusville for the return match. We had good weather today and we were able to play all 33 boys. Titusville came into this match with an impressive 4-1 record with their only loss (coming) to Grove City.”
In exhibition doubles, the pair of Phil Hachula and Bryce Bauer “didn’t play well, but they ground-out a hard fought 8-3 win which will pay team dividends down the road,” said Bartsch.
Freshman Tristan Boger and sophomore Sean McGuinness were impressive in their 8-1 victory over two Rocket starters. Also winning exhibition doubles matches were Conner Clendenen and Dylan Hansen (8-0), Mark Cecco and Eric Cecco (8-3), Neil Morrision and freshman Noah Colvin (8-5), Steffan Blair and Nick Pellegrino (8-3), Darren Liu and Alex Sherman (8-6) and Teddy Leos and Christian Olson (8-2).
The Dragons (6-0) are scheduled to play at Rocky Grove on Wednesday.
