TRACK: Knights swept in road meet

TITUSVILLE – It was a difficult start to the 2013 track & field season for the Eisenhower Knights with the Titusville Rockets sweeping past them Tuesday at Eisenhower High School.

Eisenhower’s boys team started a season full of promise with a tough 94 1/2 to 55 1/2 loss to the Titusville Rockets while the Lady Knights were defeated by a score of 87 1/2 to 62 1/2.

Eisenhower’s girls track team had a solid day, sweeping all three relay events and finishing with three individual wins. Sophomore Julia Bauer won the 800 in 2:41.4, Bizz Baran won the 400 in 1:07.9 and freshman Emily McJunkin qualified for districts and won the high jump in her very first varsity meet.

Also victorious for the Knights were the 400 relay team of Taylor Talasky, Holly Chapman, Tara Sleeman and McJunkin, the 1600 relay team of Bauer, Baran, Talasky and Apprille Seamens and the 3200 relay team of Bauer, Kate Daugharthy, Lacey Stanko and Lindsey McMillen.

“Usually when you win all three relays you win the meet, but that wasn’t meant to be tonight,” said Ike girls coach Mike Logue. “We didn’t score well in a couple of areas, but we are also very young in those areas. A lot of those girls were performing in their first meet ever. I was still very pleased with the overall results.”

Matt Eernisse and Jake VanHouten led the Eisenhower boys with three victories apiece. Eernisse won the 400 with a run of 54.0 seconds and also was a part of two winning relay teams. He teamed with John Pascuzzi, Tim Lange and Andrew Decker to win the 4X100 and with Pascuzzi, VanHouten and Andrew Onoratti to win the 4X400.

VanHouten’s other two victories came in the 300 hurdles (41.7 seconds) and long jump (18 feet, seven inches) and the Knights also got wins from Ben Perkins in the triple jump (41 feet, six and one-half inches) and Richard Knisley in the javelin (155 feet, two inches).

“For the first meet out and with very limited outdoor practice, I thought we did very well,” said Ike boys coach David Bauer. “Ben Perkins qualified for districts in both the 400 and triple jump, Jake VanHouten qualified in two of his events, Richard Knisley qualified in the javelin and Matt Eernisse qualified in both the 200 and 400. Overall, it was a great start to our season.”

Both teams return to action Tuesday, visiting Youngsville.
