SOFTBALL: Hot Start: Bupp, Lady Dragons open with chilly win over St. Marys
Warren overcame the opposition and bitter cold temperatures to record a season-opening victory on Friday, defeating Saint Marys by a 6-2 count at the Farm Colony Complex in North Warren.
Junior Alexa Bupp did her part with her arm as well as her bat, clubbing a two-run homer in the sixth inning and striking out 12 Saint Marys batters. The Dragons (1-0) needed every bit of the offense they got Friday as they struggled to make solid contact with the ball early on.
Still, as most good teams do, they were able to overcome the adversity.
“I was pleased with the way the kids battled at the plate,” said Warren coach Mark Bupp. “I felt like we had some kids work some deep counts and put the bat on the ball in two strike situations. Overall, I was very pleased with the way we settled in and played our game after things got going.”
With game time temperatures in the low 40’s – and wind chills in the 20’s – Warren got off to a nice start by sitting down the visitors 1-2-3 in the top of the first. In the bottom of the first, the Dragons were able to strike first by pushing a pair of runs across the dish.
Kaitlin Ishman and Jaimie Eaton started the winning with back-to-back walks and Ishman scored when a ball hit by Bupp was misplayed for an error. Two batters later, Meghan Loutzenhiser scorched an RBI single to the outfield, making it 2-0 in favor of Warren.
Saint Marys proved to be a worthy opponent and battled back to tie things in the top of the fourth. After catcher Cassie Wonderling reached on an error, third baseman Andrea Capelli smacked a Bupp offering deep over the centerfield fence, tying the game at 2-2.
Bupp would settle down after Capelli’s shot, allowing only one base runner the rest of the way.
Warren struggled to retake the lead, but was finally able to break through in the bottom of the fifth. Paige Wilson led off with a single and Erica Blair and Taylor Mineweaser followed with singles to load the bases. Freshman Summer Rosendahl was inserted into the lineup to run for Wilson and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly from another freshman, Kathryn Lobdell.
The Dragons took that 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth where they finally broke the game open. Ishman reached on a bunt single and two batters later, Bupp hit a two-run shot to left to make it 5-2.
Loutzenhiser followed with a two-out single and advanced all the way to third with a steal and a passed ball. Blair then worked a 10-pitch at-bat, fouling off several tough pitches before crushing an RBI single to left to score Loutzenhiser and complete the scoring.
Saint Marys won the junior varsity game, 7-5. Lobdell and Loutzenhiser had two hits each in the loss.
Warren returns to action Tuesday, visiting Central Tech.
