BASEBALL: Eagles beat weather, lose opener
NORTH EAST – You can’t hardly blame the Youngsville baseball team for looking a little rusty.
After all, Thursday’s 11-1 loss at North East High School was the first time the team had actually set foot on an actual baseball diamond this season.
The unseasonably cool and wet weather has affected all county teams this preseason and the Eagles were forced to learn on the fly against the Grapepickers. While they did muster some offensive production, North East proved to be just too powerful.
The Pickers scored the first two runs of the game before the Eagles broke through in the fourth inning. Jake Marino reached on an error to start the inning and moved to second on Aaron Hoover’s bunt single. After an out, Tyler Lehman drove in the seasons first run, scoring Marino with an RBI double.
That cut the North East lead to 2-1, but the hosts would dominate the remainder of the game, scoring the last nine runs of the night unanswered.
Youngsville (0-1) finished the night with only three hits with Lehman, Caleb Linkerhof and Hoover each recording one hit.
The Eagles were supposed to host Northwestern on Friday, but poor field conditions forced postponement of that contest.
Youngsville’s next scheduled game is Wednesday at Rocky Grove.
