BOYS TENNIS: Warren goes outside for win

SHARON – Inside or outside, the Warren boys tennis team just wins.

After opening the season with a pair of “home” indoor victories at the Lakewood Family YMCA, the Dragons (3-0) recorded their first outdoor win of the season on Wednesday with a 5-0 victory over Sharon at Buhl Park.

Shane Burns started things off with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over John Benedetto at first singles. Second singles star Matt Sandberg followed up Burns’ victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jack Evans to make it 2-0 Warren.

The singles sweep was completed by Nate Sandberg who defeated Doug McVehil, 6-1, 6-0.

The sweep was completed with doubles victories from Nick Tarpenning and Grayson Foley and Phil Hachula and Liam Boger. Tarpenning and Foley won a 6-1, 6-0 count with Hachula and Boger winning, 6-3, 6-1.

“The boys played well despite the cool playing conditions,” said Warren coach Jeff Bartsch. “They were workmanlike in their effort today.”

In exhibition play, senior Connor Clendenen scored a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Also winning by a 6-3, 6-0 count were the pair of Tristan Boger and Alex Bailey.

Warren visits Harbor Creek on Friday.
