Boys hoops All-Stars

A roller coaster 2012-13 boys basketball season ended this weekend with the release of District 10 and region all-stars for the recently completed season.

On the boys side, Warren County basketball players were rewarded with a total of four selections, including two Warren Dragons in Matt Sandberg and Mark Davis and two Eisenhower Knights in Aaron Lundmark and Colin Shine.

The lone first-team all-star selection was Sandberg out of Region 6. The senior guard had a huge year for the Dragons, leading them to a 13-9 record as well as in scoring with 317 points – an average of 14.4 points per game.

Sandberg also provided perhaps the most iconic moment of the basketball season, canning a deep three-pointer in the closing seconds of Warren’s 77-75 victory over McDowell on December 18. Sandberg’s shot sent Warren faithful storming to the court in celebration and served as the last of his game-high 29 points on the night.

Davis was named to the Region 6 second-team after a strong senior season finished with 249 points (11.3 ppg). Davis’ point total trailed only Sandberg and he led the team in both rebounds and blocked shots. The Warren big man saved his best game for last, collecting a triple double – 23 points, 12 rebounds and 11 blocks – in a Dragons win over Bradford on February 19.

For the Knights – the only county basketball team to qualify for the PIAA playoffs this season – Lundmark and Shine were each named to the Region 3 second team.

After a difficult start to the season, the Knights exploded down the stretch, winning two games in the District 10 Class A playoffs and qualifying for the PIAA field for the first time since 2009-10.

Lundmark had a stellar senior year, leading the team with a county-high 398 points – an average of nearly 16 points per contest. His teammate, Shine, battled injuries late in his senior campaign, but still was easily second on the team in scoring with 260 points. Shine and Lundmark were the only two Knights to finish the season scoring in double figures per game.

The duo were also a big reason the Knights qualified for the state playoffs where they lost in the first round to eventual PIAA Class A runner-up, Johnsonburg.

Here are the District 10, Region 3 and Region 6 all-stars for the recently completed 2012-13 season. Girls all-stars will be published in Tuesday’s edition of the Times Observer:
