Friends plan 3-day walk to raise money to fight cancer

Two young Warren County women are planning to enter the Susan G. Komen 3-Day next October, to be held in Philadelphia and 13 other cities across the U.S. on varying dates.

Jenn Scalise and Chelsea Fitch are making the walk in honor of Scalise’s mother, Ellen, who is a cancer survivor of 20 years. The girls are calling themselves “Ellen’s Melons.”

Thousands of women will walk between 15 and 22 miles over a period of three days. At the end of each day, participants will stay at the 3-Day camp, complete with a dining tent, hot showers, pink sleeping tents, evening entertainment and various other activities and helpful resources. Those who are not comfortable camping out for two nights can elect to stay at a hotel at their own expense (host hotels will have special room rates available for 3-Day participants).

Scalise said “I decided this would be the year to do it, and I talked my best friend (Fitch) into it, too.” When the weather improves, the two will begin a practice regimen that includes walking to Sheffield and back.

Each woman must raise $2,300 in advance in order to be a part of the walk, and the intrepid women will distribute forms to various business around town, so people who wish to help may mail tax-deductible donations. Scalise said “Any amount will help.” She has opened an account at the NFO Irvine Credit Union, located in the WarrPenn Building on Third Street in Warren, for walk-in donors. There is also a website, The3Day.org, and a toll-free number, 11-800-996-3DAY where credit cards are accepted. They would also appreciate corporate and foundation support. On average, Susan G. Komen 3-Day walkers raise over $3,000 each. Amazingly, they usually reach that goal with just 25 donors or less.

While being interviewed for the story, a woman overheard the young womens’ plans, and handed Scalise $5 for their first donation.

The two will travel to Philadelphia on Thursday, October 3 and begin the walk the following day, returning to Warren October 7.
