Unexpected grant enables TAWC to buy tractor for snow plowing
Some unexpected grant money has allowed the Transit Authority of Warren County to acquire some new equipment.
The equipment, a John Deere tractor with a blade, bucket and spreader, will allow TAWC to save additional funding because it will be able to plow snow instead of contracting out the service.
Last October, the authority learned that a capital grant included more funding for the purchase of a bus and a re-paving project than was necessary. Director John Aldrich proposed using the approximately $30,000 that was left to purchase the tractor.
At its January meeting, the authority board of directors received notice that the amended grant application, allowing the tractor purchase, was approved by the state. The board then approved a motion for $27,253.87 for the purchase. The equipment was acquired through an existing state contract.
Aldrich told the board at Thursday’s meeting that the equipment has been received.
“It’s a nice little John Deere,” he said. While the contract with the current snow removal provider, Jack Black Excavating, requires a 30-day notice before termination, Aldrich recommended letting them finish out the season. “We need time to learn how to run” the new tractor, he said.
