WRESTLING: To be continued…: 7 county wrestlers aim for top 6 at D-10 Class AA tourney Friday and Saturday

Seven county wrestlers will take to the mat at this weekend’s District 10 Class AA Wrestling Tournament at Sharon High School, all with hopes of extending their season one more week.

Youngsville’s Jaykup Durlin (220) and Stone Sivak (182) will join Eisenhower’s Jake Johnson (195), Robbie Wilston (152), Louie Head (145), Tyler Gourley (132), and Dylan Raines (285) in making the trip to Sharon, where the top six grapplers in each weight class will move on to the Northwest Region Class AA Tournament the following weekend, also in Sharon.

Three Warren Dragons – D-10 champ D.J. Fehlman, Chris McNeal and Alex Streich – made it to Class AAA regions this past weekend. Both Youngsville coach Scott Ishman and Eisenhower’s Kiel Woodburn believe their guys have what it takes to make it through.

“My expectation is to survive districts and move on to regions. I’m sure that’s everyone’s expectation,” said Ishman. “I think (Jaykup Durlin) has a good chance to be in the top four, not just the top six. So does Stone.

Durlin and Sivak both picked up second-place finishes in their respective weight classes at the sectional tournament, which means high expectations moving forward.

“We had a good workout today, and we’re going up to practice with Warren tomorrow to get some different practice partners,” added Ishman. “I think working with (Chris) McNeal and (Alex) Streich will be good for our guys.”

Ike will send five wrestlers to districts, and hope to have five moving on to regionals.

“We’re taking it one match at a time. Looking at the brackets, I think we’re sitting pretty good,” said Woodburn. “It’s really up to the guys now. It’s just a matter of how far they want to go this year. They’re in the best physical shape of their lives, they just need to be there mentally.”

For those who didn’t perform as well as they may have hoped at last weekend’s Section 1-AA Tournament at Union City High School, the district tournament offers a clean slate, but some familiar faces.

“Look at Jake Johnson,” said Woodburn. “The top three guys in the region (at 195) were in our section, we’re definitely going to see those guys again. The other weights are going to see some new guys. Reynolds is the top team down there, and we haven’t seen any of those guys this year.”

Johnson – who currently has 99 career wins for the Knights – wrestled to a fourth-place finish at Union City, as did teammates Wilston, Gourley, and Raines. Louie Head advanced all the way to the finals, earning a second place finish at 145.

A total of five county wrestlers advanced to last year’s Northwest Regional Class AA Tournament, including Durlin and Johnson. Joining them was Aaron Hoover of Youngsville, Trevor Spicer of Eisenhower, who spent this season wrestling at Frewsburg, and Sheffield’s Ricky Prosen out of the District 9 tournament.
