Patriotism

Dear editor:

This is in response to the letter from Dale Honhart under the title “Got Respect?”

I was horrified to read that a local high school had abbreviated the Pledge of Allegiance to six words, “I pledge allegiance to the flag..” What flag? Unbelievable! That is a disgrace and a missed opportunity to teach at least a little bit of respect, patriotism and price in the flag of the United States of America. It saddens me deeply.

I, too, have been very surprised and disappointed at many events to note that very few people place hand over heart to show respect when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance or for our national anthem. I have seen this at the 4th of July Parade and at sporting events. Even the athletes, apparently, are not asked or taught to do this and, most of those whom I have observed, do not.

I subscribe to an old slogan, “America – love it or leave it!” If you don’t appreciate our hard fought freedom and the good life we enjoy at the expense of many lives having been given for that cause then try living somewhere else!

Please, respect and appreciate the Flag of the United States of America and all that it stands for – love God and Country.

Thank you.
