SWIMMING: Warren swims past Beavers
CORRY – A busy final week to the regular season began with a Warren Dragons sweep of the Corry Beavers during a Region 3 swim meet held Monday at Corry Area High School.
Warren’s girls were a 124-52 winner on Monday with the boys coming out on top by a 116-63 count.
The Warren boys (10-4) and girls (8-6) swim teams have two meets remaining this week, beginning with a 6 p.m. Tuesday matchup with Mercyhurst Prep at Penn State Behrend. The season concludes Thursday at the Warren County YMCA with the Dragons host the Cathedral Prep boys and Villa Maria girls.
The Lady Dragons had little trouble with Corry and finished the night with three four-time winners, including Elin Smith, Ellis Beardsley and Mandy Fehlman.
With her District 10 wrestling champion brother D.J. watching in the stands, Fehlman had perhaps the most impressive night by winning all four of her events and qualifying for districts in the 100 fly.
“She’s been shooting for that 100 fly for awhile and I’m glad she got there,” said Warren coach Jeff Walters. “Her brother had a big weekend, but she definitely had some of her 15 minutes of fame tonight.”
Fehlman was an individual winner in the 100 fly and was also a member of three winning relay teams. She teamed with Smith, Bethany See and Beardsley to win the 200 medley relay, with Smith, Christine Kuzminski and Lacey Grinnen to win the 200 free relay and with Beardsley, Grinnen and Alexis Vavala to win the 400 free relay.
Smith and Beardsley each added a pair of individual wins and Kuzminski and Grinnen were one-time winners in individual events. Smith won the 200 IM and 100 back, Beardsley the 200 and 100 free events, Kuzminski the 50 free sprint race and Grinnen the 500 free marathon.
Walters also praised the efforts of See who filled in for the team’s top swimmer in the breast stroke, Anna Falvo. Walters said See did “an absolutely outstanding job” in helping the team swim to victory in the 200 medley relay.
The boys were led by Logan Gearhart who finished first in all four of his events. Teammates Bennett Steber and Cameron Daniels added three wins each with Sean McGuinness, Clark Eason and Wyatt Pierson adding two each. Christian Olson was an individual winner in the 500 free.
Gearhart won the 200 IM and 100 back on his own as well as the 200 medley relay with McGuinness, Steber and Daniels and the 200 free relay with Steber, Eason and Daniels. Warren’s 400 free relay team of McGuinness, Bob McAvoy, Eason and Pierson was also victorious.
Bennett Steber added a close win in the 100 back and Daniels and Pierson also had what Walters called, “two of the most impressive swims of the night.”
Pierson qualified for districts with his winning time of 2:04.65 in the 200 free and Daniels scorched the competition with a personal best time of 50.81 seconds in winning the 100 free.
