College news

Sheffield High School graduate Kalil Slaughter led the way on Saturday as Penn State Behrend’s men’s track and field team won the Kenyon Invitational at Gambier, Ohio.

Slaughter, a freshman, qualified for the Eastern Collegiate Athlete Conference (ECAC) championships by winning the 60-meter dash in 7.09 seconds and 200 in 22.73 seconds. He was also on the winning 4×200 men’s relay that broke a school record in 1:34.47.

Warren Area High School graduate Katie Spade finished first for Penn State Behrend’s women’s track team on Saturday in the one-mile run at the Kenyon Invitational in Gambier, Ohio, in 5:21.96.

On Friday, at the RIT Orange/Brown Invitational, Spade’s 4X400 relay team qualified for the ECAC’s and set a new school record in 4:08.18.

Warren Area High School graduate Brandon Schott is a catcher on the Division I University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) men’s baseball team. In a 2-1 loss in 10 innings to Winthrop on Friday, Schott threw out a runner, attempting to steal, at second base.

Warren Area High School graduate Tyler Fantaskey scored a season-high 12 points, including three 3-pointers, in Pitt-Bradford’s 67-52 defeat of Franciscan on Saturday in Bradford,

With the win, capping a 3-0 week, Pitt-Bradford qualifies for the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Tournament. The Panthers (13-12) travel to Penn State Behrend in Erie on Tuesday for the AMCC quarterfinals.

Warren Area High School graduate Kelsey Nuhfer placed 14th overall out of 59 swimmers for California University of Pa. on Saturday in the 50-yard freestyle at the PSAC Championships. Nuhfer qualified in 24.25 seconds, then swam 24.42 seconds in the consolation finals in Mechanicsburg.

Her 400 freestyle relay team improved its NCAA Championships ‘B’ time after placing sixth overall on Sunday with a time of 3 minutes, 31.22 seconds.

Youngsville High School graduate Abel Robinault was part of Division II California University of Pa.’s distance medley relay provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a conversion time of 10:05.14 at the Buckeye Classic hosted by Ohio State.

Ike baseball

The Eisenhower Baseball Boosters will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in room 309 at EHS. Players and parents of players are urged to attend as the team is kicking off its find-raising efforts.

Youth wrestling

Several area wrestlers placed on Sunday in the 2013 Great Lakes-EWL Wrestling Tournament at Edinboro University, including: Josef Bauer, Eisenhower, third, 11+-year-old, 129 pounds; Garrett Head, Eisenhower, first, 11+, 87; Alex Barnett, Eisenhower, fourth, 11+, 99; Mikeal Beaver, Eisenhower, first, 7-8, 80; Jacob DeSimone, Youngsville, third, 9-10, 119; Cael Black, Eisenhower, second, 9-10, 136, and; Easton Hedman, Eisenhower, third, 9-10, 57.

Warren’s boys basketball game vs. Bradford on Tuesday is at Bradford. The junior varsity game begins at 6 p.m. with varsity to follow in their last game of the season.
