WRESTLING: 3 Dragons in semifinals at District 10 tourney
ERIE – Three Warren Dragons wrestlers remain in the running for District 10 Class AAA championships and all other competitors remain alive after the opening day of the District 10 Class AAA Wrestling Championships at Central Tech High School in Erie.
Defending D-10 Class AAA 120-pound champion D.J. Fehlman advanced to the semifinals at 126 pounds as did senior teammate Chris McNeal at 195 pounds and sophomore Alex Streich at 220 pounds.
Each Warren wrestler is aiming to finish among the top four in their respective weight classes thus earning a trip to the PIAA Class AAA Northwest Regional Tournament scheduled for March 1-2 in Altoona.
The top seeded Fehlman (28-1) didn’t spend much time on the mat Friday, needing just 2:25 to build a commanding 15-0 lead over Oil City’s Trenton Hogue. Waiting for Fehlman in the semifinals will be Cathedral Prep’s Alex Root. Root wrestled at 126 pounds, but Fehlman bumped up to 132 pounds when the Dragons and Ramblers met in a dual match on December 13.
On the other side of the loaded 126-pound bracket are McDowell junior Coleman Cousins and second seeded General McLane sophomore Keller Watkins. Watkins handed Fehlman his only loss of the season during a dual match between the teams in January. Fehlman later avenged that loss in the finals of the Fred Bell Memorial Tournament in Grove City.
Despite having a bye into the semifinals on the original copy of the 195-pound bracket, McNeal had a quarterfinal round bout after all on Friday. That match proved to be little trouble for the senior who needed just 1:23 to pin Titusville’s Tyler Nicole.
McNeal advances to the semifinals where he will square off with Central Tech junior Seth Brown (11-14). A win there would assure McNeal of not only a trip to the D-10 Final, but also of a trip to the PIAA Class AAA Northwest Regional Tournament in Altoona.
Streich had to dig down deep to escape with a victory in his 220-pound quarterfinal bout. Facing Titusville’s Ty Lohr, Streich scored the only point of the match with an escape and advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 victory.
Streich’s competition is even stiffer in the semifinals where he is expected to face General McLane’s Ian Mallory on Saturday morning. Mallory and Streich met once earlier this season with Mallory logging the first period pin in a dual match between the teams on January 16.
Wrestling resumes at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with the championship semifinals, consolation quarterfinals and consolation semifinals. The consolation finals (3rd and 4th-place matches) are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. with the Parade of Champions and championship finals slated for 4 p.m.
