WRESTLING: Wins Mark: Sheffield sets season wins record; Dragons warm up for districts
Sheffield’s wrestling program set a new standard for itself on Tuesday night.
The Wolverines defeated Clarion, 48-27, at Sheffield High School to register a school-record 13th win of the season, and it took them less than 45 minutes to do it.
The previous win record was set during the 1981-82 season, according to Sheffield High School records.
More recently, Sheffield head coach Jack Rice has led the Wolverines to nearly double the seven team wins from last year.
Ricky Prosen (120 pounds) got things started for Sheffield when he pinned his opponent in 1:43. The Bobcats answered back with a decision and a pin to take the lead, but it was short-lived.
Doug Grubbs (138) won a thrilling 6-4 decision over Jacob Troutman, before Adam Barr (145), Steve Gregerson (152), Collin Maines (160), Zack Miller (170),and Dylan Straw (185) all won by forfeit to give the Wolverines a commanding lead.
The Bobcats registered three consecutive pins on the mat, but it was too late for a comeback, and Tanner Barr (106) and Kyle Holden (113) added wins by a forfeit and a decision, respectively, to end the match.
“I’m elated about the win,” said second-year Sheffield head coach Jack Rice of a program that has put much of its focus on individual results in recent years due to a numbers game. “It’s awesome. I’m really proud of the guys. We might not be the best team in the area, but it’s been an honor and a privilege to coach these boys. Their work ethic is absolutely phenomenal.”
The Wolverines will look to add one more win to their new dual match record when they host Coudersport on Thursday in the final match of the regular season. The District 9 Class AA individual championships are set for Feb. 22 and 23 at Clarion University.

District 10 Class AAA team duals champion McDowell may have given its starters a rest on Tuesday night, but the Dragons weren’t taking the match lightly, as they earned a 45-18 Region 4 win over the Trojans at Warren Area High School.
“It was nice work for (McDowell), and it gave us an opportunity to wrestle some good matches,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger. “A lot of guys wrestled well. Dan Henry had a big pin, Steven Crone gave up some weight (moving up to 285) and battled back to get the win, and Alex Streich wrestled well against their only starter.”
The Dragons jumped on the visitors early when Garrett Smead put his team ahead with a 2-0 decision at 152. After a McDowell pin at 160, Warren reeled off five straight wins, including pins from Henry (182), Streich (220), and Crone (285), as well as an overtime victory from Derek Reagle at 170, and a forfeit win awarded to Chris McNeal at 195.
Neither side sent a wrestler out in the 106-pound weight class, and the Trojans got themselves back on the scoreboard with a pin at 113 before Warren’s Seth Johnson earned a pin at 120, and D.J. Fehlman followed that up with a 3-0 decision at 126.
McDowell got its final win of the night with a pin at 132, and the senior duo of Jonah Hordusky and Mike Card closed things out with decisions for the Dragons at 138 and 145, respectively.
The win over McDowell closes out the team season for the Dragons, who will now prepare for the District 10 Class AAA individual tournament this Friday and Saturday at Central Tech High School.
“We’ve got some guys who are right on the edge,” added Baldensperger. “They’re taking four qualifiers instead of three this year, so it could open a window for some of our guys.”
