Freshmen hoops

The Warren freshmen boys basketball team defeated Strong Vincent, 50-44, Saturday at Warren Area High School. Devin Nowacki had a huge game for the winners, finishing with 22 points while Sheldon McMeans and Ryan Skerda added eight points each. Logan Galloway and Mark Reiff added four points and Jason Waterfield and Andrew Gignac finished with two points.

The Dragons are now 12-3 on the 2012-13 season.

College news

Warren Area High School graduate and Pitt-Bradford men’s basketball player Tyler Fantaskey scored five points for the Panthers during a 69-65 road loss to Mount Aloysius on Saturday. Fantaskey and the Panthers (10-12) return to action Monday, hosting D’Youville.

Youngsville High School graduate and California University of Pennsylvania men’s track & field team member Abel Robinault helped the Vulcans to a seventh-place finish at the Baldwin-Wallace Invitational on Saturday.

Robinault finished seventh in the one-mile run, completing the event in 4:28.19.

Robinault and the Vulcans return to action Saturday, competing at the Kent State Tune-Up event.


Russell’s Jesse Valone competed for the Stroup’s Gymnastics team this past weekend at the Nickel City Classic in West Seneca, N.Y. Valone scored an 8.075 on the vault, an 8.60 on the bars, a 9.025 on the beam and a 9.25 on the floor on her way to a second-place finish in the Platinum Xcel Group. Valone’s all-around score was a strong 34.95.



Three Eisenhower wrestlers and one Youngsville wrestler are included in Dan Albaugh’s latest edition of the District 10 and PIAA Northwest Region Class AA wrestling rankings. Youngsville’s Jaykup Durlin remains the highest ranked wrestler with his third spot at 220 pounds in both the district and the region.

For the Knights, 113-pounder Steven Haner and 195-pounder Jake Johnson are currently ranked fourth in the district with 120-pounder Jeb Fedorchuk sixth. Johnson is the only Ike wrestler ranked in the region with his fourth spot at 195 pounds.


The Sheffield wrestling article published in Saturday’s Times Observer stated that the District 9 Class AA Wrestling Championships will be held February 22-23 at DuBois High School. The tournament will actually be held those same dates at Clarion University.
