WRESTLING: 3-for-3: Dragons, Eagles, Wolverines win matches

Warren wrestlers claimed victories in all but three matches Tuesday night en route to a 57-13 non-region win over Cambridge Springs at Warren Area High School.

“I think we wrestled fair,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger, whose Dragons improve their dual match record to 14-5 with the win. “We were a little sloppy at times. There’s still room for improvement.”

After a Cambridge Springs pin at 126 opened the night, the Dragons racked up five straight wins, including a pin from Bailey Pratt at 138. Warren earned three technical falls in that stretch from Jason Peterson at 132, Jonah Hordusky at 145, and Garrett Smead at 160, as well as a victory by forfeit in the 152-pound weight class.

“I thought Garrett wrestled the most technically sound match of the night,” added Baldensperger.

The Blue Devils picked up a win in the 170-pound weight class before Warren reeled off three consecutive pins from Dan Henry, Chris McNeal, and Alex Streich. Cambridge Springs received their last victory of the night via decision in the heavyweight class, and freshmen Glyn Mahood and Bailey Winslow wrestled to pins in the final two matches at 106 and 120.

The Dragons will be one of four teams in action at the District 10 Class AAA Team Duals on Thursday at Central Tech, where they open with top-seeded General McLane. The Lancers topped Warren, 68-3, earlier this season, and are currently undefeated in dual meets.

Sheffield 47, Keystone 33

KNOX – Sheffield earned its 10th dual match victory of the season Tuesday with a 47-33 victory over Keystone at Keystone Area High School.

The Wolverines (10-8) were largely helped by forfeits on Tuesday, receiving 30 free points via Keystone forfeits while the home team held a 33-17 advantage on the mat. Of the nine contested bouts, Sheffield won just three of them.

All three wins came in a four-match span early in the match that started at 113 pounts. Brandon Johnston was a 16-0 technical fall winner over Keystone’s Austin Curtis and the Wolverines also got pins at 145 and 152 pounds.

At 145, Adam Barr needed just 24 seconds to pin the Tigers’ Kyle Creed and at 152 pounds, Steve Gregerson logged a first period pin of Logan Means in 1:37. Forfeit wins for the Wolverines were credited to Tanner Barr (106), Ricky Prosen (120), Doug Grubbs (138), Collin Maines (160) and Tyler Berin (195).

Sheffield returns to the mat Thursday when it hosts Youngsville.

Youngsville 27, Strong Vincent 24

ERIE – Youngsville won just one bout on the mat during Tuesday’s wrestling match with Strong Vincent at Strong Vincent High School.

That being said, the Eagles left Erie with their third straight dual match victory, defeating the Colonels by a 27-24 score.

“We didn’t have our best night tonight,” said Eagles coach Scott Ishman. “Sometimes you’re going to have those bad matches and I hope tonight was our bad match for the week. Of course if you’re going to have a night like this, it’s nice to have it against a team without a full lineup. I hope the guys see we need to step it up in the room a little bit and not level out. We need to keep climbing as the postseason gets closer.”

Sophomore Aaron Hoover provided the lone Eagles victory in a match that featured four double forfeits and four Eagles forfeit wins. Hoover earned a 13-6 decision win over Strong Vincent’s Alec Smith at 132 pounds.

Youngsville (4-9) returns to the mat Thursday when it travels cross county to meet with Sheffield.
