BOYS HOOPS: Dragons drop region road game

HARBORCREEK – This one will sting a little.

Warren let a first-half lead slip away and ultimately lost a Region 6 game, 53-47 in overtime, at Harbor Creek on Tuesday.

“We did not take advantage of a lot of opportunities in the first half,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine, whose Dragons are 8-6 overall and 3-4 in the region. Harbor Creek is 5-10 and 3-5.

The Dragons led by eight points when Joe Zoltowski hit a 3-pointer that brought the Huskies within five at halftime. Zoltowski proceeded to score 15 of his game-high 23 points in a 17-12 third quarter as the Huskies tied the score.

With the Dragons now trailing by two points, Austin Jerman sank two free throws to tie the score with 14.4 seconds remaining in regulation.

Harbor Creek went 8-of-10 from the free throw line in overtime, and Warren managed just two more points.

“The game was lost in the first half,” said Berdine. “We had many opportunities to build a nice lead. We let them hang around.

“In overtime, we executed sets to get good looks, and didn’t get one to go in,” he said.

Mark Davis finished with 14 points and five blocks in the loss. Jacoby Passmore added 10 points, and Collin Fantaskey contributed nine points and six rebounds for Warren, which hosts Corry on Wednesday.

East Forest 72, TCCS 40

MARIENVILLE – Tidioute gave one of its best performances during the second half of Tuesday’s game at East Forest. However, a sub-par first half was too much to overcome during a 72-40 loss to the Bears.

“It’s the story of our season. We just didn’t rebound the ball. It’s been our sore toe all season,” said TCCS coach Dave Manning. “Foul shooting also hurt us tonight. Those are missed points that could keep us in the game and it also changes a lot of momentum.”

After falling behind 40-14 at halftime, the Bulldogs closed the gap to just 32-26 in the second half. Brian Faulkner had a strong game in defeat with a season-high 17 points. Travis McLaughlin added eight points and Pat Thompson finished with seven.

The Bulldogs won the junior varsity game, 40-35. Ben Kightlinger led TCCS with 19 points and a total of eight different players scored in the win.
