Athletes advance: Cheerleaders to states, Fehlman to finals
FAIRVIEW – Warren Area High School’s competitive cheerleading team finished fourth overall, out of nine teams, and second in the five-team Small Varsity division at the inaugural District 10 competition cheerleading championships Saturday at Fairview High School.
The top seven teams automatically qualify for the PIAA championships Feb. 2 in Hershey.
The top seven teams on Saturday included: Fairview, Harbor Creek, Mercyhurst Prep, Warren, McDowell, Wilmington, and Oil City. McDowell was the Large Varsity D10 champ, Harbor Creek Medium Varsity, and Fairview Small Varsity – ahead of Warren.
Elsewhere, D.J. Fehlman has advanced to the finals of the 126-pound weight class at the Fred Bell Memorial Tournament in Grove City. Fehlman faces a rematch with the district’s top-ranked 126’er in General McLane’s Keller Watkins, who earned a 7-2 decision over Fehlman at Warren Area High School.
Fehlman tech-falled Mitch Blose of Redbank Valley, 19-0, in the semifinals Saturday, and Watkins earned an overtime decision over Kyle Lukowich of Conneaut in his semifinal match.
