WRESTLING: 4 Dragons in Fred Bell quarters

ERIE – Four Warren wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals of the 29-team Fred Bell Tournament held Friday at Grove City High School and several other Dragons wrestlers remain alive in the wrestlebacks.

D.J. Fehlman (126 pounds), Garrett Smead (152), Chris McNeal (182) and Alex Streich (220) will all wrestle for a chance to advance to the semifinals when wrestling resumes at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Remaining alive in the wrestlebacks are 132-pounder Jason Peterson, 160-pounder Cody Gunn and 195-pounder Dan Henry.

Fehlman wrestled two matches on Friday, but spent just over two minutes on the mat while earning two pins. In the pigtail round, Fehlman pinned St. Marys’ Brandon Mackie before pinning Titusville’s Derrick Bish in the preliminary round to advance to the quarterfinals.

Fehlman’s classmate and teammate, sophomore Alex Streich, also won two matches on Friday, going the distance and beyond to advance to the quarterfinal round. After a quick pin of Cambridge Springs’ Josh Ebright in the pigtails, Streich gutted out a 6-4 overtime decision of Stroudsburg’s Kevin Hughes to lock up his spot in the quarters.

Smead and McNeal advanced to the final eight in their respective weight classes with just one victory on Friday. Smead earned an 11-2 major decision over Hickory’s Shane Beatty and McNeal pinned Jamestown’s William Shappee to advance.

In the consolation brackets, Henry received a bye to remain alive at 195 pounds and Peterson and Gunn earned victories. Peterson held off Redbank Valley’s Austin Schrecongost, 5-4, to wrestle into Saturday while Gunn decisioned Jamestown’s Mathias Shappee, 9-2.

“Probably the highlight of the day was Alex Streich – down two (points) with 20 seconds to go – took the kid down in to tie it up and took the kid down to win in OT,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger of his 220-pounders win over Hughes to advance to the quarterfinals.

Baldensperger said a couple of other Dragons had strong finishes late in wins, including McNeal in the championship bracket and Peterson in the consolation bracket.

Youngsville 36, Harbor Creek 24

HARBORCREEK – Youngsville won its second dual match of the week Friday, defeating Harbor Creek, 36-24, in a make-up dual match at Harbor Creek High School.

Three forfeits proved to be the difference in the bout as the Eagles (3-9) took advantage of the free 18 points and used them to it their advantage.

In addition to the forfeits received by Chester Ciukaj (120 pounds), Stone Sivak (182) and Jaykup Durlin (220), Youngsville earned four additional victories over the Huskies.

106-pound freshman Hayden Victor set the tone for the evening with a 5-0 blanking of his 106-pound opponent, but the Huskies rallied to win the next two matches to take a 12-9 lead.

Youngsville got back on track with the efforts of Tristan Gibson at 145 pounds. Gibson wrestled well and held off a late charge from his opposition to give his team three points and an 8-5 decision victory. Two bouts later, Zach Ishman earned a second period pin to again put Youngsville ahead after it had fallen behind.

Trailing 24-18 with four weight classes remaining, the Eagles put the finishing touches on the win with one last flurry of wins. Sivak’s forfeit win at 182 pounds tied the match and – after a double forfeit at 195 pounds – Durlin’s forfeit made it 30-24 Eagles.

That put heavyweight Austin Slocum on the mat needing to avoid a pin to give Youngsville the win. Slocum did all that and much more, pinning his opponent in 2:50 to give Youngsville the win.

“The kids wrestled hard tonight and this win was a big confidence booster,” said Eagles coach Scott Ishman. “Hayden was dominant in his 5-0 win and Tristan Gibson earned us a big win at 145 pounds. The kids continue to bust their butts and are going in the right direction as the post season approaches.”

The Eagles return to the mat Tuesday, visiting Strong Vincent.
