WRESTLING: Dragons, Eagles cruise to wins
ERIE – Warren took advantage of seven forfeits and 42 free points during a 51-25 victory over the Strong Vincent Colonels Wednesday at Strong Vincent High School.
The victory pushed the Dragons to 13-5 on the season despite Strong Vincent holding a 25-9 advantage in matches contested on the mat.
“I thought we had some solid matchups on the mat and wrestled some of their better kids,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger. “Jonah (Hordusky) wrestled a nice match at 138 pounds and Michael Card was in control of his match the entire time. Garrett Smead also was leading a ranked wrestler late in his match before he got stuck on his back and was pinned.”
The Dragons basically won the match without breaking a sweat, winning half of the matches via Strong Vincent forfeits. Alex Streich (220 pounds), Kevin Barsness (285), Glyn Mahood (106), Bailey Winslow (113), D.J. Fehlman (126), Chris McNeal (182) and Dan Henry (195) all received free victories.
Warren’s two victories on the mat came from Hordusky and Card. Hordusky gutted out a hard-fought 10-6 decision over the Colonels’ Jay Henderson and Card decked Strong Vincent’s Mike Keyes at the 3:53 mark of the 145-pound match.
At 152 pounds, Smead squared off with District 10 ranked Jared Carlson, holding a 13-10 lead in the third period before getting stuck on his back and pinned with 1:26 remaining.
Warren will hit the practice room Thursday before starting competition at the annual Fred Bell Tournament in Grove City on Friday.

Youngsville 56, Iroquois 12
LAWRENCE PARK – Youngsville has been trying to win on the mat all season long.
On Wednesday, not only did it win on the mat, but it also secured its second dual match victory of the year with a 56-12 win over Iroquois.
“We’ve been doing well on the mat all season and that was the goal again tonight,” said Youngsville coach Scott Ishman. “We won four out of the six matches on the mat and one of those losses we gave them a forfeit. The kids wrestled well. Zach (Ishman) did a nice job bumping up to 170 pounds and Hayden (Victor) chose to wrestle up at 113 rather than take a forfeit and he got a nice win.”
Youngsville received six forfeits during Wednesday’s win over the Braves, including those from Kris Wilcox (152 pounds), Nate Bickford (160), Stone Sivak (182), Jaykup Durlin (220), Austin Slocum (285) and Chester Ciukaj (120 pounds).
On the mat, Ishman, Victor, Aaron Hoover and Tristan Gibson were victorious.
Ishman logged a second period pin of Nathaniel Kightlinger at 170 pounds and Victor bumped up to 113 pounds where he was a 10-5 decision winner over Andrew Bachetti. Hoover was dominant in a 17-1 technical fall win at 132 pounds and Tristan Gibson pinned Iroquois’ Jake Kruze late in the first period.
The Eagles (2-9) return to the mat Friday, making up a road match at Harbor Creek.
