Out of area

The late Robert L. Ishman, formerly of Warren, will be inducted posthumously into the Punxsutawney Sports Hall of Fame on April 20, at Punxsutawney Area High School.

Ishman was selected from over 150 nominations for the 2013 class of the Punxsutawney Hall of Fame, with 10 other inductees. The Punxsy Hall “honors people who have had significant contributions to athletes at Punxsutawney Area High School,” said committee chairman Keith Hughes. Hughes has been chairman since 1998 and the Punxsy Hall was founded in 1995.

Ishman, being represented at the banquet by his son, Mike Ishman, of Warren, and family, was the only athlete at Punxsutawney High to be awarded three varsity letters for the three sports he played (track, football and basketball) in the year of 1956. He was a district track champion in broad jump and high jump in 1955.

Ishman was a two-year letterwinner as a quarterback, running back, punter and kicker in football, and a three-year letterwinner in basketball. In hoops, Ishman was first team all-district in 1956, second team in 1955, and honorable mention in 1954.

He also played American Legion baseball in Punxsutawney, and was later an American Legion baseball coach in Warren, as well as a standout rec fastpitch softball player here in the 1960s. He moved here after serving in the U.S. Army from 1957-1959, and was an elementary basketball and Little League baseball coach, and an avid golfer in the area. He worked at Betts Industries for 17 years.
