GIRLS HOOPS: Villa topples Warren

Villa Maria used two big runs – one in the first quarter and another in the fourth – to take control during a 47-30 Region 6 victory over the Warren Lady Dragons Monday at Warren Area High School.

The Victors (10-2 overall) sit atop the region standings with a 4-0 record while Warren drops to 10-4 overall and 2-2 in the region.

After Warren scored the first two points of the game on a pair of Paige Wilson free throws, Villa Maria rattled off 11 straight points to quickly open up a nine-point lead. The Lady Dragons cut the lead to five late in the first quarter, but Villa answered with another run to take an 11-point lead into the second quarter.

Warren would cut Villa’s lead to nine going into halftime, but would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Jaimie Eaton did all the scoring for the Dragons in the third quarter, draining three three-pointers. However, the Victors had an answer for everything and were able to seal the deal in the fourth quarter by holding Warren to just a single point.

Warren struggled with turnovers throughout the game and also had problems finding open looks, collecting just eight field goals to the Victors’ 17.

Eaton led the way for the Dragons with 15 points while Wilson added a strong game with four points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

“We had it down to single digits going into halftime, but at the end of the day, when you committ 24 turnovers, you’re not going to win,” said Warren girls coach Lisa Ruhlman. “I was happy with the way the girls battled, but now we’ve got to get ready for Thursday (against Harbor Creek).”

Villa won the junior varsity contest, 57-31. Brittany Massa led Warren with 10 points and Meghan Loutzenhiser added nine markers of her own.

Warren returns to action Thursday, hosting Harbor Creek.
