GIRLS HOOPS: Lady Dragons on short end at Classic

ERIE – Warren went toe-to-toe with a giant Friday, playing defending New York State Class B Catholic School State Champion Buffalo Cardinal O’Hara in the Martin Luther King Jr. Classic at Erie East High School.

The Lady Dragons gave an effort to be proud off, but ultimately had to settle for only a moral victory during a 57-55 loss.

“(O’Hara) entered the game undefeated so we were really looking forward to this game,” said Warren coach Lisa Ruhlman. “They are a big team and a great basketball team, but we played right with them. I thought our girls played great. We just didn’t get the win tonight.”

The game was close throughout with the scored tied after a quarter and the Lady Dragons leading by three at halftime. The score was again tied after three periods, but O’Hara had carved out a five-point lead with just 40 seconds remaining.

With the score 57-52, Warren’s Kari Santo knocked down a three-pointer to get the Dragons within a deuce. Moments later, the Dragon defense forced a jump ball and Ruhlman called a timeout to set up one last play, trying to tie or take the lead.

Warren (10-3) ran the play, but the equalizer wouldn’t fall and O’Hara escaped with the two-point victory.

Jaimie Eaton led all scorers with 24 points, D.J. Hahn added 11 points and Paige Wilson finished with 10 points. Eaton added eight rebounds and Hahn and Wilson added seven boards apiece.

The Dragons return to the hardwood Monday when they host Villa Maria.
