AAA honors local law enforcement

Three Warren County law enforcement agencies were given awards for community traffic programs in 2012.

In December, AAA East Central awarded its Gold Award for traffic safety to the Youngsville Borough Police and silver awards to both the City of Warren Police Department and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.

“The Youngsville Police Department received the Gold Award,” AAA East Central Safety Advisor Terri Rae Anthony said. “They do a lot of work with their schools…bicycle and helmet safety, underage drinking and teen driving…along with community programs including occupant protection, child passenger safety, distracted driving, DUI, etc.”

“It shows that we work very hard for our community to keep our roadways safe,” Chief Todd Mineweaser said. “I am proud of what we have accomplished.”

“They are an example to other small departments,” Anthony said. “You do not have to be large to make a big difference.”

Mineweaser carried that idea further. “Youngsville Borough is a small community but a big family and we are doing our best efforts to keep our children, elderly, citizens, and visitors safe from poor decision makers,” he said. We now have many more qualified officers trained in detection of impaired drivers.”

In addition to high school and community outreach programs, the department works extra hours on traffic issues.

“We work many extra hours of traffic enforcement for our community which is paid for through grants awarded to us by Pa Buckle Up, Aggressive Driving Enforcement, DUI and PennDOT,” Mineweaser said. “So our residents receive extra services in our borough which are all reimbursed financially by the state.”

“AAA is kind enough to recognize some of the things we do above and beyond what is expected of us,”‘ Mineweaser said.

“Warren County Sheriff’s Department received a Silver Award – teen driving, underage drinking, mock crashes,” Anthony said.

“It shows the hard work from the deputies and the service we provide the community,” Sheriff Ken Klakamp said.

The office’s efforts also included Pa Buckle Up and child safety seat check programs.

“Warren Police Department received a Silver Award – occupant protection, child passenger safety, distracted driving,” Anthony said.

“The police department is honored to receive the silver traffic safety award from AAA again this year,” Warren Police Sergeant Brandon Deppen said. “This is the fifth year the department has received an award for our efforts in improving traffic safety in the City of Warren.”

“The award was received for our efforts in the aggressive driver and seat belt enforcement programs, child safety seat inspections and most importantly for our work in the schools promoting seat belt, pedestrian and school bus safety,” Deppen said.

“All three (departments) are great partners with the AAA and with each other,” Anthony said.

AAA East Central includes Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, New York, and Kentucky.
